Trenchless Pipe Repair

Repair Your Pipes To Save Time and Money

HammerHead Trenchless Certified

Montana Plumbing Company is a certified NuFlow and HammerHead trenchless contractor. We rebuild pipes from the inside with two cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining methods — NuFlow pull-in-place lining, ideal for pipes inside your building and smaller lines, and HammerHead inversion lining for larger sewer and drain lines up to 12 inches — with no digging up your yard, driveway, or floors.

What is Trenchless Pipe Repair?

Pipe lining restores and renews old, broken, or corroded pipes to like-new condition without removing or replacing them.

CIPP creates a long-term jointless, seamless structural pipe inside the existing pipe system without digging, which means zero disruption to your landscape or property. A thin resin liner is installed inside the pipe to seal and protect the system from further deterioration—dramatically extending the life of the piping system.

The damaged pipe is rehabilitated to a better-than-new condition with an increased flow rate, eliminating weakened joints, sealed cracks, and eradicating the chance of groundwater pollution.

CIPP before and after

How Does Trenchless Pipe Repair Work?

Step 1: Inspection and Diagnosis

As certified NuFlow and HammerHead installers, we use a drain camera to inspect the existing pipes for corrosion, roots, or cracks. Based on the pipe size, location, and condition, we recommend the right lining method and a plan for cleaning and lining.

Step 2: Cleaning

Debris, roots, and corrosion are removed from the pipes using specialized tools, restoring the pipe to its original diameter.

Step 3: Trenchless Pipe Repair

Using existing access points, we install a resin-saturated liner with the method best suited to your pipe. For pipes inside the building and smaller-diameter lines, we pull the liner into place and inflate an internal bladder that presses the resin against the pipe wall (NuFlow pull-in-place). For larger sewer and drain lines up to 12 inches, we invert the liner into the pipe with air or water pressure (HammerHead inversion).

Step 4: Curing and Evaluation

Once the resin has fully cured, we remove any temporary bladder or equipment, leaving a clean, strong, seamless pipe-within-a-pipe. We finish with a final camera inspection for quality assurance.

Benefits of Trenchless Pipe Repair

As buildings age, pipe deterioration—like corrosion, repeat sewer backups, roots, and cracks—is more likely. Pipe lining has many advantages over traditional pipe replacement.

  • No-dig, trenchless solution using existing access points.
  • Less disruptive to tenants and owners.
  • Faster than traditional pipe replacement.
  • Suited to fit the most challenging pipe situations.
  • Cost-effective by avoiding structural destruction of buildings, hardscapes, landscapes—and the associated reconstruction costs.

Trenchless Pipe Repair – Frequently Asked Questions

What is trenchless pipe repair (CIPP pipe lining)?
Trenchless pipe repair, also called CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) lining, rehabilitates a damaged sewer or drain line from the inside, without digging it up. A resin-saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe and cured in place, forming a seamless, jointless pipe within a pipe. As a NuFlow-certified contractor, Montana Plumbing Company uses this process to restore old, cracked, or root-invaded pipes to better-than-new condition.
How long does trenchless pipe lining last?
A properly installed CIPP liner is designed and tested for a 50+ year service life, with real-world performance typically in the 40 to 60 year range. The NuFlow and HammerHead systems we install are engineered and warrantied for long-term durability, and because the new liner is seamless and corrosion-resistant, it is not vulnerable to the joint failures and rust that damaged the original pipe.
Is trenchless repair cheaper than digging up my yard?
In most cases, yes, especially once you factor in restoration. Traditional excavation means tearing up and rebuilding landscaping, driveways, sidewalks, or concrete floors. Trenchless lining needs only one or two small access points, so you avoid most of that expense. Homeowners often spend 30 to 50 percent less than a full dig-and-replace once surface restoration is included. We provide a firm quote after a camera inspection.
How long does the job take?
Many residential trenchless jobs are completed in one to two days, and smaller spot repairs are often finished in a single day. Traditional excavation on the same line can take several days to a week or more once digging, replacement, and restoration are accounted for.
Will you have to dig up my yard, driveway, or floors?
Almost never in full. The trenchless process works through one or two small access points rather than a continuous trench, so your landscaping, driveway, and hardscaping stay largely intact. That is the biggest advantage over traditional sewer replacement.
What kinds of pipe can be lined?
CIPP lining works on most common sewer and drain materials, including clay, cast iron, concrete, PVC, ABS, and Orangeburg. It is used for sewer lines and drain lines. The best approach depends on the pipe’s condition, which we confirm with a video camera inspection before recommending lining.
Does trenchless lining stop tree root intrusion?
Yes. Tree roots get into pipes through cracks and open joints. The cured liner is seamless and seals those entry points, so roots can no longer work their way in. This is one of the most common reasons Missoula-area homeowners choose lining over repeated rooter cleanings.
Will lining reduce my pipe’s flow capacity?
No meaningful loss, usually the opposite. The liner is thin, and the new interior is smooth and jointless, which often improves flow compared to a corroded or root-filled old pipe, even after the slight reduction in diameter.
When is trenchless not the right solution?
Trenchless lining needs a host pipe that is still structurally intact enough to line. If a pipe is fully collapsed, severely misaligned, or has major sags (bellies) or back-pitch, it may require pipe bursting or traditional excavation instead. We always run a camera inspection first so we recommend the method that will actually last.
